Shirley Parker Johnson, 85 of Ovid, Idaho passed away on April 17th in Logan, Utah, where she was surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 14, 1929 in Wardboro, Idaho to George Henry Parker and Jemima Alsop Parker. She has five brothers and one sister. Her family later moved to Paris, Idaho where she spent her teenage years. She graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho in 1947. She married her High School sweetheart, Ray Johnson on August 6, 1948 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They lived and raised their family in Ovid, Idaho and were blessed with seven children, 19 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Shirley's family was her life and greatest accomplishment. They spent many hours together working on the farm, gardening, camping, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and picking huckleberries. She had a great love of the outdoors and loved to be out observing the beauties of nature. She was a wonderful cook. She was very talented musically playing piano, accordion, harmonica and performing vocally in quartets and choirs. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, knitting, sewing and many crafts. Music soothed her soul up until the very end.
She was a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints. She served valiantly for many years in the Relief Society and Young Women organizations and in the Primary until she was 85. She received the Silver Beaver Award recognizing her for exceptional service in scouting. Ray and Shirley were long time members of the Bear Lake Rangers horseback riding club. Shirley was most importantly a good neighbor and friend and believed very much in community and supporting those around her. She was a friend to all and her door was always open.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents George and Jemima Parker, her husband Ray, her brothers Elwood, Fred, Alfred, Chet, Gilbert, and her sister Nola. She is survived by her children Max (Jean)Johnson of Logan, Utah, Rodney(Suzanne) Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho, Rex (Dee) Johnson of Bern, Idaho, Marie (Jerry) Somers of North Logan, Utah, Lenard Johnson of Layton, Utah, Jennifer (Michael) Sparks of Montpelier, Idaho, Brenda (Patrick) Wolfe of Waldport, Oregon, and her 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on April 24th from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Schwab Mortuary at 702 Clay Street, Montpelier, Idaho. A viewing will be held on April 25th from 9:30-10:45 am at the Bern Ward (132 Church Street, Bern, Idaho) followed by a funeral at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Ovid Cemetery after the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rex Johnson, 1245 Lower Bern Road, Bern, Idaho, 83220 to help support Shirley's grandchildren who are serving missions for the LDS church or to a charity of your choice.
