Ralph Miles Sleight (96) passed away peacefully at the Pioneer Care Center in Brigham City, Utah on May 23, 2015. Ralph was born January 19, 1919 in Paris, Idaho to Thomas George Sleight and Emily (Miles) Sleight.
He was raised in Paris, Idaho. He worked on his father's farm raising crops and livestock. He attended Fielding High School where he participated in football and boxing. He also worked with and for his brothers Seymour, Raymond, and Carl farming, logging and laboring.
Ralph married his lifelong sweetheart, Beatrice Sarah Butler, in the Salt Lake City Temple on March 17, 1942. They had 8 children. They lived in Utah and Idaho, but most of their lives were spent in Paris, Idaho. Ralph served in the Army during W. W. II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Ralph worked as a welder and machinist in Salt Lake City, in the Afton sawmill, and the phosphate plants in Georgetown, and Soda Springs, Idaho. He also had his own machine and blacksmith shop in Paris. He served on the Paris City Council and on irrigation boards.
Ralph was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints (LDS). His church callings included: a mission to the Southern States Mission (serving in Florida and South Carolina), Stake Missionary (a Seventy) for many years, in Joe Dunford's Bishopric, a Branch President, instructor, genealogist, name extractor, indexer and arbitrator. Ralph and Beatrice served together on an LDS mission in West Virginia and other service missions for over eight years microfilming vital and legal records for the Church from Virginia to Washington State.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, wife Beatrice and two sons, Keith Butler Sleight and Wendall Dean Sleight. He is survived by his children: Emily (Steven) Hirst of Fruit Heights, UT., Thomas (Toni) Sleight of Garland, UT., Reed (Gayla) Sleight of Pocatello, ID., Daryl (Shirley) Sleight of Paris, ID., Glenn (Darlene) Sleight of Fallbrook, CA., H. Lee (Marianne) Sleight of Weston, ID., and Wendell (Alice) Sleight's family of Mollalla, OR. He has 30 grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 17 step great grandchildren (Toni's grandchildren).
Funeral Services will be held in the Paris LDS Chapel at 11:00 on Saturday, June 13, 2015. A viewing will be on June 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Paris LDS Church and from 9:30 to 10:45 prior to the funeral. Ralph will be interred in the Paris, Idaho cemetery with military honors.
