Norma Ann
Nye
January 3, 2017
Norma Ann Nye, 84, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at The Gables, in Logan, Utah after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Norma was born on September 14, 1932 to Carl and Ella Zenola Hunter Peterson in Kimberly, Idaho. She attended schools in Kimberly, a one room school house in Sugar Loaf, then Jerome Elementary and graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1950. She learned the value of hard work while picking potatoes or thinning beets on the family farm. She attended one year at Brigham Young University and learned the value of education.
She worked for a music supply company while in high school. This company supplied juke boxes to many of the local business in the area. She worked at Twin Falls Bank and Trust and advanced to the position of teller.
She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas W. Speedy in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 25, 1953. They resided in Twin Falls. Together they had two children, Sue Ann Speedy and Thomas Jon Speedy. Tom died June 12, 1957 in a National Guard aircraft accident.
After Tom's death, with persuasion and counseling from friends, Norma and the children flew to Newport News, Virginia to stay with close friends, Ray and LaRay Young. While attending their LDS ward, Norma was introduced to Don C Nye and wahhhhlaaaa.
After Don was honorably discharged from the Army, they continued their courtship and married September 12, 1958 in the Logan Temple. They resided in Paris, Idaho and worked the farm. Together, they raised an additional five children, Vickie Daun, Cherie Lynne, Tonya Leigh, James Don and Mark Peterson. Norma helped in all aspects of the farm except riding a horse. Dad's horse Trixie threw her over a fence on her first ride. After that, all transportation methods had to have a steering wheel and a brake.
Norma attended all of her children's school, church, sport and music events and was their most devoted supporter. She was very proud of her children's accomplishments. She worked outside the farm and the home in many positions. For 20 years, she managed the picking of raspberries for Arlo Price in Garden City, Utah. She supervised the cleaning of the Sweetwater Resort Condominiums for many years. She was compassionate with the needs of handicap children and had the opportunity to attend to their needs. For 24 years, she worked with students in the Bear Lake County School District. She loved these kids and was loved by them.
Norma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held positions in the Primary, Relief Society and Young Women organizations. She enjoyed working in the Library and was a tour guide at the Paris Tabernacle.
Norma enjoyed a good book and a Coke. She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables from the garden. She loved to embroider pillow cases and dish towels. She provided plates of food to those in need. She enjoyed dinners with friends and family. She loved the music of Frank Sinatra. She had a tender heart for patriotism. Every Saturday she made 12 loaves of bread. She was delightful.
After retiring from the school district, she worked with Don on the farm. It soon became apparent that her memory was fading. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and Don became her primary care giver for the last 5 years.
Norma is survived by her husband Don C Nye of Logan, Utah, her children Sue Ann (Garry) Field of Springville, Utah, Tom (Susan) Speedy of Logan, Utah, Vickie (Bruce) Belmont of St. George, Utah, Cherie (Scott) Burton of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Tonya (Doug) Jewell of Paradise, Utah, James (Andrea) Nye of Logan, Utah and Mark (Natalie) Nye of Paris, Idaho.
