Lynn A
Dimond
July 20, 2016
Lynn A Dimond, age 78, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Cokeville, Wyoming on July 20. With the exception of his studies as a young man at the University of Wyoming Lynn spent his entire life in Cokeville.
Lynn was born on December 8, 1937 at the family ranch and raised northeast of town in a small log home still located near the Smith Fork River. He inherited his strong work ethic and knowledge of the cattle business from his father, Weldon; he came to value education and history from Mary, his mother. In part, his compassion and caring came from decades of working with and caring for a brother, Dick, with special needs.
Lynn will always be remembered as a cowboy and rancher but he was also an avid outdoorsman, community pioneer, patriot, good neighbor and friend. Above all, he was a wonderful father and grandfather.
He helped break ground for many of the community organizations and establishments that Cokeville and the State of Wyoming know today. He was a charter member of both the Cokeville Lions Club and the National Cattle Association. He served as a member of the Wyoming Stockgrowers' Association, frequently chairing its subcommittees. Elected to the Wyoming State Grazing Board, he also served as the chair for the Lincoln County Conservation District for 10 years. He accompanied then Governor Ed Herschler overseas as part of a goodwill tour in Europe, sharing his knowledge of agriculture in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. As the Lincoln County Recreation Commissioner for 30 years, he helped start and build the Pine Creek Ski area, serving on the National Ski Patrol for many years and instructing children in the formal ski school program. Many of the rodeo arenas, golf courses, parks and playgrounds in the county are the result of Lynn's handiwork and leadership during his three decades of service with the commission. He served as a Lincoln County Fair Board member for 14 years, never missing a meeting. He was asked to help spearhead the Steer-A-Year program on behalf of the Cowboy Joe Club at the University of Wyoming and was honored as an Outstanding Volunteer for his role in the program's debut.
Lynn was distinguished by not only his love of the outdoors and recreation but a willingness to share his talent to the benefit of others. As a seasonal hunting guide and outfitter, he worked hard to ensure his guests got their money's worth, developing many lifelong friends in the process. He always had a knack for bringing people together, whether it was a small gathering of locals in a café, or a large group around a campfire after moving cows. He knew how to make people feel welcome and how to build camaraderie. As a rancher, Lynn never had employees, considering people who worked for him as extended family.
He was an honest and courteous neighbor in a community of shared fences and water, and public access lands. His many acts of service were done quietly, particularly among the elderly. He was the kind of friend who not only plowed rural driveways in the winter but made sledding hills out of the excess snow for the children.
As a father and grandfather he guided and nurtured intuitively, choosing quiet, everyday moments to teach life lessons—often while working in hayfields, fishing on rivers, or driving through mountain ranges. His wisdom was sage but offered sparingly. More often than not, his children and grandchildren were led by his example and unspoken values. The greatest gift he gave to his family, besides his unconditional love, was his time. His steady presence in the lives of those who called him family and friend will be greatly missed.
Lynn was the father of three children: Kevin (Lisa) Dimond and Amy and Keith Dimond, all of the greater Phoenix, Arizona area. He was the proud grandfather of Tanner and Jordyn Dimond.
Services for the deceased will be under the direction of Schwab-Matthews Mortuary and held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cokeville, Wyoming on Saturday, July 30. The visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral at 12:00 noon. Interment will take place at the Cokeville Cemetery.
