Kim Russell
Chournos
July 25, 2013
Kim Russell Chournos, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away far too early at the young age of 60, on September 25, 2013, at 12:55 pm. He died of a very aggressive brain tumor he had been fighting for 5 months. His family tearfully said goodbye to a man who was truly an inspiration. Kim was born July 28th 1953 to George Russell Chournos and Joyce Ann Todd Notarianni, in Ogden Utah. Although he spent most of his life in Idaho, he also lived in Utah, California, and New Zealand.
In Kim's younger years he learned to love the great outdoors, while helping his father and grandfather herd sheep on the Chournos Ranch. He also learned to ride horses and motorcycles, fishing on the ranch and in New Zealand, camping, playing soccer, golf and even skydiving. Thanks to his mother and father, Kim gained a love for and became excellent at music and learning. Kim shared his love for all these hobbies and talents with his family, when he married his high school sweetheart Kathy Rowley. Together with their little family, they loved, laughed, cried, worked hard and played hard for 43 years.
Kim always had a fierce work ethic. Starting out working at a green house, then professional guitar player, and an electrician assistant, Kim felt he needed a better job to support his family. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1973. While stationed at Mountain Home AFB in Idaho Kim advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He continued his outdoor lifestyle with camping and fishing in the nearby mountains and lakes. He even dabbled in lapidary work, making jewelry. From the time Kim was a young boy, he played guitar and piano. He played in several rock, country and soul bands while in the military. After an honorary discharge, Kim took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled at Utah State University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. While going to school, Kim took his family to his father's in WY. There they rode horses, herded sheep, ice skated, and went snow skiing. He also used the skills in soccer he learned in New Zealand, to coach several soccer teams, including Kimie's, his daughter.
After graduation, Kim was hired by Hewlett Packard where he worked as a Computer engineer for 30 years. While at HP, he worked in Research and Design, Disc Memory, Printers, Marketing and Firm Ware. Because of Kim's extreme intelligence, he became one of HP's most valuable engineers. He continued coaching soccer, and a new hobby he discovered was astronomy.
Kim kept life exciting. He loved sailing, on their sail boat; they had horses for 15 years, and loved backpacking with them into the high country mountains. The hobby that kept Kim and Kathy busy his final days, was riding dirt bikes, sport quads, and a utility quad, where he added yet another hobby to the long list, geocaching. They loved riding all the mountain and desert trails. Of all these toys Kim's pride and joy was his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Kim and Kathy loved riding their motorcycles everywhere.
Kim truly loved life. He had a great smile, and a fun sense of humor. He could fix or build anything, and was extremely generous. One thing that will truly be missed is hearing him play his guitar.
Kim is survived by his favorite riding partner and sweet loving wife, Kathy, his two daughters Kea Chournos Loveland (Lamont), and Kimie Chournos Snapp (Michael), 10 grandchildren, his Father George and wife Kumeroa and mother Joyce Notarianni and husband Lou, and his sisters Kellie Cox, Kara Kamerath, Kaye Lynn Arledge, Kiana Gilmore, and Cammy Notarianni. Kim is also preceded in death by his brother Walter Nicholas Chournos and his Son-in-Law Brent Thomas Jordan.
