Burton LeRoy
Ludwig
November 30, 1939 – June 10, 2026
Burton LeRoy Ludwig passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Montpelier, Idaho, surrounded by his loving family.
LeRoy was born on November 30, 1939, in Juneau, Alaska, to Burton A. Ludwig and Edna L. Pedersen Ludwig. He was the oldest of six children. When he was three years old, the family moved from Alaska to Conda, Idaho, where his father worked in the phosphate mine. Later, they moved to Nounan, Idaho, where his father took over the family farm. There, LeRoy learned the value of hard work and spent his youth helping with the many responsibilities of farm life.
LeRoy attended elementary school in Nounan and Georgetown, Idaho, and graduated from Montpelier High School. Following graduation, he went to work for Central Farmers Fertilizer Company in Georgetown.
In December 1961, he began serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southwest Indian Mission.
Upon returning home, he worked several jobs and in 1964 began what would become a 46-year career as a mechanic at Jensen Wood Motor. Through dedication and skill, he became a trusted friend and mechanic to countless people in the community before retiring in 2010.
On June 11, 1971, LeRoy married the love of his life, Annette Passey, in the Logan Utah Temple. They just reached the milestone of 55 years of marriage. Together they built a loving home and raised six children. His family will always remember the lessons he taught through his example, the time he spent with them, and the unwavering love he showed throughout his life.
LeRoy was happiest when surrounded by family, working outdoors, or helping someone solve a problem. He was a friend to all. He loved the outdoors and found great joy in hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, cutting firewood, and spending time with family in the mountains.
He was a dedicated member of Bear Lake County Search and Rescue for many years, serving his community with generosity and compassion. His quiet strength, steady example, and dependable nature earned the respect of all who knew him. We will always remember his wonderful sense of humor. He loved to tease, tell a good story, and bring a smile to those around him. Even during his final days, he continued to joke with family members and caregivers, a reflection of the positive outlook and enduring spirit that characterized his life.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous callings throughout his life and was known for his quiet testimony, willingness to help others, and steadfast devotion to the Lord. LeRoy's legacy is one of faith, hard work, service, and love. He taught by example the importance of family, honesty, and helping others, and his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.
He will be greatly missed and we look forward to a joyful reunion. LeRoy is survived by his beloved wife, Annette; his children, Dannette (Jason) Klein, Chad (Kirsten) Ludwig, Michael (Holli) Ludwig, Todd (Nikilyn) Ludwig, Paul (Kaylee) Ludwig, and Kara Ludwig; 21 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren, with a ninth expected soon. He is also survived by his siblings, Allen Ludwig, Patsy Smith, Kenneth Ludwig, and Kathleen Jepson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Edna Ludwig, and his sister, Lourien.
A viewing will be held at Schwab-Matthews Mortuary, Sunday, June 14th from 6:00-8:00pm and on Monday, June 15th from 10:00-11:00am. A graveside service will be held at the Montpelier City Cemetery at Noon, Monday, June 15, 2026. Family and friends are invited to attend.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Peter Crane and the Nurses and Staff at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital for their compassion and their care of our husband and father.
