Alyn James Jones's Obituary

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Alyn James Jones, returned to his Heavenly Father's arms on Saturday, August 10th, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.

Alyn was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 23, 1932. He was the first of three children born to Heber and Erma (Adamson) Jones. He grew up in Bluffdale, Utah and graduated from Jordan High School in 1950.

Alyn joined the US Navy during the Korean War in January 1950 and served through December of 1953. During that time, he was stationed in San Diego, Long Beach, and the last 4 months were spent in San Francisco.  He traveled to Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan during this time, and enjoyed seeing different parts of the world and making lifelong friends.

After his time in the Navy, Alyn moved back to Salt Lake City and started attending school at the Radio Institute. In November of 1954, he met the love of his life Janice Storms through his best friend Howard.  Howard then married Alyn's cousin Barbara, and it led to a lifetime of continued double dates and cherished memories.  Alyn and Janice were married on April 2nd, 1955, in Menan, Idaho, and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles LDS temple on May 22, 1957.

Alyn and Janice moved to Lancaster, California in 1955 where he started his career at Northrop Aircraft.  They enjoyed their newlywed years in California before settling down in Kaysville, Utah in 1959 and starting their family.  It was there that they welcomed their children Mark, Christine, Carrie, and Lisa.

While raising his four children, Alyn loved to play ward basketball, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved taking his family to California.  Alyn also served as bishop in the Kaysville 7th ward for a number of years and could always be counted on to help neighbors in the community and serve those in need.

Alyn started working at Hill Air Force Base where he spent the remainder of his career.  He worked in Foreign Military Sales Logistics and was able to travel the world, where he loved visiting exotic locations and bringing back gifts for his kids. He made many cherished friends who he remained in touch with for the rest of his life.

In 1993 Alyn retired from HAFB and spent a year off before deciding that he needed to get back to work.  He spent the next nine years working at Granite Furniture, where he also made friends of all ages who appreciated him for his strong work ethic and funny sense of humor.

Alyn spent his remaining years in Fruit Heights, Utah where he loved working in his garden, reading, and spending time with his family where he was affectionately known as Grandpa Big Al.  Alyn and Janice loved their annual trips where they would meet up with Alyn's veteran's group, each year in a different city across the US.  Alyn and Janice also served in the Bountiful LDS temple for a number of years.

Alyn is survived by his wife Janice, his children Mark (Carla) Jones, Christine Clark, Lisa (Scott) Douglass, and his sisters Kathi Bergquist and Patti Sleight. He leaves behind eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him greatly.

Alyn is preceded in death by his daughter Carrie Sheldon, son-in-law Ken Clark, and his parents Heber and Erma (Adamson) Jones. He will be missed for his funny observations and sayings, good humor, and his ability to have fun in any situation.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 15th, 2024, at 1:00 pm, with the viewing beforehand starting at 12:00 pm at the LDS chapel on 75 N Main St. in St. Charles, Idaho.  Alyn will be laid to rest in the St. Charles Idaho cemetery alongside his daughter Carrie.  Alyn's family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of McKay-Dee Hospital and McKay Hospice in his final days.
