Agnes Rose Scarbrough's Obituary

Agnes Rose Berg Scarbrough, 98, best known as Vikki, to all who knew her, passed away January 10, 2018 at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier, Idaho.

Vikki was born January 7, 1920 in Sleepy Eye, MN to Frederic and Anna Berg, the fifth of ten children. At the age of five, they moved to Sanborn, MN. Starting at the age of eight, she spent each summer at a relative's or friends for board and room and a bit of wage to help defray school costs through the winter. When she was thirteen, her family's life made a sudden change, when her father died at the height of The Great Depression. She grew up in a close knit, loving family and they all worked hard to help each other and keep the family together.

At sixteen, she met Dwight Edgar Scarbrough, and it was "love at first sight." They dated continuously for six months, until he had to return to Canada to work at his grandmother's farm. After graduation, she attended a beautician course. She was able to reconnect with Dwight during that time and had one visit to Canada. The remainder of the time, they communicated through daily letters until they were married on July 16, 1940 with $19 to start their new life.

They lived in Canada, where Dwight worked at the American Consulate. When the United States entered WWII, Dwight joined the US Air Force and Vikki returned to Sanborn. After the war, Dwight returned to work at the American Consulate, but this time in Panama. He passed the exam to become a Foreign Service Officer and their life of interesting adventures truly began. After Panama, they lived in La Paz, Bolivia - Rome, Italy - London, England - Paris, France, and Hong Kong, China, before settling in Sun City, AZ in 1978 upon Dwight's retirement. Life was never easy living in all those foreign countries, but they met and entertained many interesting people from the Queen of England to other foreign heads of state to movie stars, such as Rock Hudson. Through it all, Vikki was always loving, kind, and generous to all – a true lady.

She had a love for sewing and made many beautiful creations throughout her life, starting at age eleven. Her true passion came a little later in life – golf. She golfed three times a week until she was 92. She was Chairman of her Clubs in both Hong Kong and Sun City. Vikki was always up for a good game of Yahtzee with family of all ages, and was happiest when the winning was evenly spread around.

She spent the last two years of her life close to her daughter, Sheryl, at the Bear Lake Manor Assisted Living Home in Montpelier, Idaho. She enjoyed being with all the residents and employees and participated in all the activities right up to the end.

Vikki was a devout Catholic her entire life and attended the St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Sun City, AZ for nearly 40 years. A memorial service and "celebration of her life" will be held in Sun City in the near future.

She is survived by one son, Dwight Scarbrough II, of Bandon, OR and four daughters, Carolyn Pitts of Sun City, AZ – Sandra Walters of Paris, France – Sheryl Bomsta of Montpelier, ID and Tamara Mehta of London, England. She has 14 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, two sons-in-law, three brothers, five sisters, and one grandchild.

Funeral: Saturday January 20, 2018 12:00 PM
